π Short History:
Black Donkey Brewing is an independent craft brewery located in Ballinlough, County Roscommon, Ireland. It was founded by Richard Siberry and Michaela Dillon in 2014, making it one of the newer additions to the Irish craft beer scene.
Richard, an Irish native, and Michaela, a New Yorker, were inspired to start the brewery after living in New York City for several years, where they were exposed to the burgeoning American craft beer scene. They decided to bring this passion for craft beer back to Ireland, and thus, Black Donkey Brewing was born.
The name "Black Donkey" is a nod to the Irish tradition of using donkeys to transport goods, including beer, and the color black is a reference to the dark, rich beers that are often associated with Ireland.
Black Donkey Brewing is known for its commitment to using traditional brewing methods and locally sourced ingredients. They are particularly known for their Sheep Stealer Irish Farmhouse Ale, which is a nod to the traditional Belgian Saison style.
In 2016, Black Donkey Brewing made headlines when they discovered a strain of yeast in a medieval Irish church, which they then used to brew a special beer called "Underworld Savage Ale". This beer was the first in their "Underworld" series, which focuses on using ancient and wild yeasts.
As of now, Black Donkey Brewing continues to operate in County Roscommon, producing a range of craft beers that are distributed throughout Ireland.
