π Short History:
Great Basin Brewing Co. is a well-known brewery based in Nevada, United States. It was founded by Tom Young, a former geologist, in 1993. The brewery is named after the hydrographic Great Basin, which covers most of Nevada and parts of five other U.S. states.
Tom Young's interest in brewing began in the 1980s when he started home brewing. He later attended the Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago to learn more about the science of brewing. After completing his studies, he returned to Nevada and opened Great Basin Brewing Co. in Sparks, a city in Washoe County.
Great Basin Brewing Co. is recognized as Nevada's oldest operating brewery. It has played a significant role in the state's craft beer industry, introducing a variety of beers to the local market. Some of its popular brews include the "Icky IPA" and "Outlaw Milk Stout".
The brewery has won numerous awards over the years, including several medals at the Great American Beer Festival. In 2014, it was named the "Best Mid-Size Brewpub and Brewers in America" at the Great American Beer Festival.
Great Basin Brewing Co. has expanded since its inception, opening a second location in Reno, Nevada in 2010. Despite its growth, the brewery continues to maintain its commitment to quality, crafting its beers in small batches using traditional methods and locally sourced ingredients whenever possible.
