π Short History:
The Griesedieck Brothers Brewery has a rich history that dates back to the mid-19th century. The Griesedieck family's brewing tradition began in Germany and continued when they immigrated to the United States.
The Griesedieck Brothers Brewery was officially established in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1911 by brothers Henry, Joseph, and William Griesedieck. However, the family's involvement in the brewing industry began much earlier. Their father, Anton Griesedieck, had previously operated the A. Griesedieck Brewing Company, and their grandfather, Henry Griesedieck, had run the Lafayette Brewery in the mid-1800s.
The Griesedieck Brothers Brewery quickly became a significant player in the St. Louis beer market. By the 1920s, it was one of the largest breweries in the city. The brewery survived Prohibition by producing near beer, a low-alcohol beer, and soft drinks.
After Prohibition ended in 1933, the Griesedieck Brothers Brewery resumed full-strength beer production and regained its status as a major brewery. The brewery was known for its flagship beer, Griesedieck Brothers Pilsener Beer, and other popular products like Griesedieck Brothers Pale Dry Beer.
The brewery faced challenges in the mid-20th century due to increased competition and changing consumer tastes. In 1957, the Griesedieck Brothers Brewery merged with the Falstaff Brewing Corporation. Falstaff continued to produce beer under the Griesedieck Brothers name until the 1970s.
In the early 21st century, the Griesedieck family returned to the brewing industry. Descendants of the original Griesedieck brothers reestablished the Griesedieck Brothers Brewery in St. Louis, where it continues to operate today. The modern Griesedieck Brothers Brewery produces a variety of beers, including a recreation of the original Griesedieck Brothers Pilsener Beer.
