π Short History:
Lost Coast Brewery and Cafe, also known as Table Bluff Brewing, Inc., is a brewery located in Eureka, California. It was founded in 1986 by Wendy Pound and Barbara Groom, making it one of the first female-owned breweries in the United States.
The idea for the brewery was born when Groom, a pharmacist, and Pound, a family therapist, decided to pursue their shared interest in homebrewing. They initially planned to open a brewpub, but the project evolved into a full-scale brewery. After two years of planning, they opened the Lost Coast Brewery and Cafe in 1988.
The brewery started in a small, 100-year-old building in downtown Eureka. The initial brewing equipment was second-hand, including a 20-barrel brew system from the Mendocino Brewing Company. Despite these humble beginnings, the brewery quickly gained popularity for its unique and flavorful beers.
In 1990, Lost Coast Brewery introduced its flagship beer, Downtown Brown. This English-style brown ale quickly became a favorite among beer enthusiasts and remains one of the brewery's most popular offerings.
In 1994, due to increasing demand, Lost Coast Brewery expanded its operations and moved to a larger facility. This allowed the brewery to increase its production and distribution, reaching a wider audience.
In 2014, Lost Coast Brewery moved again to an even larger, state-of-the-art facility, capable of producing over 200,000 barrels of beer annually. This new facility also includes a tasting room and a restaurant.
Today, Lost Coast Brewery is one of the largest craft breweries in the United States, distributing its beers in 22 states and several countries worldwide. Despite its growth, the brewery remains independently owned and operated, staying true to its roots as a small, local brewery.
