📜 Short History:
Schwechater Brauerei, located in Schwechat, Austria, has a rich history that dates back to the 17th century.
The brewery was first mentioned in historical records in 1632, making it one of the oldest breweries in Austria. It was originally owned by the local council of Schwechat, a small town near Vienna.
In 1796, Anton Dreher took over the management of the brewery. Under his leadership, the brewery underwent significant modernization and expansion. Dreher is credited with the invention of the "lager" beer style, which he first brewed at Schwechater in 1841. This beer, known as "Schwechater Lager," was a huge success and helped to establish the brewery's reputation.
In 1862, the brewery was passed on to Anton Dreher Jr., who continued his father's work. He expanded the brewery's distribution network, making Schwechater beer available throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire and beyond.
In the 20th century, the brewery faced several challenges, including the two World Wars and the economic crises that followed. Despite these difficulties, Schwechater Brauerei managed to survive and continue its operations.
In 1958, the brewery was acquired by Brau AG, the largest brewing group in Austria at the time. This acquisition led to further modernization and expansion of the brewery.
In 2003, the brewery became part of the Heineken Group, one of the largest beer producers in the world. Today, Schwechater Brauerei continues to produce a variety of beers, including its famous lager, under the Heineken brand.
