π Short History:
Tilted Barn Brewery is a farm brewery located in Exeter, Rhode Island, USA. It was founded by Matt and Kara Richardson and is known for being the first farm brewery in the state of Rhode Island.
The history of Tilted Barn Brewery is closely tied to the history of the farm it's located on. The farm, known as Biltmore Farm, has been in Kara's family for over 100 years. The couple started growing hops on the farm in 2007, initially supplying local home brewers and craft breweries.
In 2013, they decided to start their own brewery and named it Ocean State Hops. However, they soon realized that they wanted to brew their beer directly on the farm, so they changed their business model and rebranded as Tilted Barn Brewery in 2014.
The name "Tilted Barn" comes from an old, leaning barn on the property, which was originally built in the early 18th century. This barn was used as the brewery's taproom until 2020, when a new, larger barn was built to accommodate the growing business.
Tilted Barn Brewery is known for its farm-to-table approach, growing many of the ingredients used in their beers directly on the farm. They specialize in hop-forward ales, but also produce a variety of other styles, including stouts, saisons, and IPAs.
As of 2021, Tilted Barn Brewery continues to operate on the farm in Exeter, contributing to the local economy and the craft beer scene in Rhode Island.
